Why anomaly detection appeals to manufacturers
Many production lines do not have perfect defect labels. Teams know what a good part looks like, but they do not have a clean library of every possible bad outcome. That makes anomaly detection attractive because the model can learn normal behavior and flag deviations.
In practice, though, anomaly detection is only useful when the flagged result can be reviewed, explained, and connected to operations.
Why Jetson is a good fit
Jetson boards are attractive because they combine camera integration, local inference, and industrial-style interfacing in one edge device. They fit well in situations where sending every frame to the cloud is unnecessary or undesirable.
For manufacturing lines, local processing reduces bandwidth load and keeps the inspection latency predictable.

The output should be reviewable
A raw anomaly score is not enough for production teams. They need a saved frame, an overlay, a timestamp, and a line or station identifier. Otherwise the model becomes a black box that operators ignore.
This is where many prototypes fail. The model flags something, but nobody can act on it because the surrounding workflow was never designed.
Thresholds must be treated as process settings
There is no magic universal threshold. The correct threshold depends on camera stability, product variation, acceptable defect risk, and how many false positives the operation can tolerate. Threshold tuning should be part of commissioning, not an afterthought.
A practical system also separates warning thresholds from fail thresholds. Not every anomaly event should stop a process.
Where rule overlays help
Rule overlays provide a bridge between AI and operations. You can define which region matters, what anomaly score triggers which state, and how long the condition must persist before it becomes an alarm. That keeps the system from reacting wildly to one noisy frame.
It also gives a cleaner path for explaining the inspection logic to non-ML stakeholders.

Jetson-based anomaly detection can be powerful, but only if the surrounding workflow is disciplined. Good lighting, stable capture, explainable outputs, stored evidence, and sensible thresholds are what turn a model into a usable inspection tool.
